Motion activated cameras with alarm systems have long kept things safe on the home front and in businesses. But keeping homes and businesses burglar-free and safe from intrusion and theft isn't all these cameras are being used for these days.

Whether it's protecting pets from wild coyotes, capturing images of that rare bird that keeps landing on the patio, scaring raccoons away from the garage can or making sure the pool stays toddler-free, motion activated cameras are useful in a wide variety of situations.

Maintaining a Safe Perimeter
For parents, child-proofing the home is a necessary step in preventing kids from getting into dozens of dangerous or scary situations, whether it's mitigating poison risk by securing cabinets or securing furniture to the wall to keep it from toppling onto a small child.

Now, parents are also adding motion activated cameras to the mix.

Rachelle Wall, 27, a Utah mom of a 2-year-old toddler, became increasingly concerned with the safety of her son after she discovered him playing around the backyard pool after he'd somehow learned to unlock the back door.

"I panicked," Wall said. "Even when he was home with the babysitter or his dad, I'd be at work just thinking 'Is he OK?'"

For Wall, a motion detector alarm camera was the right solution to alleviate her fears and keep her pool deck child-free. The alarm made sure the babysitter or parent at home would be sure to act quickly if her son got anywhere near the pool, which activated the camera and alarm.

The video footage also offered the added benefit of allowing her to discover just how her son had managed to get into the yard undetected, allowing her to secure locks and child-proof her door more effectively.

Preventing Attacks and Preserving Tranquility
In Nahant, Mass., the problem was puppy-snatching coyotes that had invaded the small town. Worried pet owners who had heard of attacks on cats and dogs installed motion activated cameras to both scare away the predators and also to confirm that it was indeed coyotes invading their yards.

The footage provided proof to state wildlife control authorities that the disappearing pets weren't simply runaways and gave them better information to address the problem.

Motion activated video cameras have also found use among farmers who want to keep predators out of their barns, gated areas and hen houses. Footage allows them to repair entry points for predators to better secure their livestock.

In a more serene setting, birdwatchers and other wildlife lovers have been known to use the cameras to capture those rare visits from birds and animals of a more friendly nature.

Motion activated cameras are available both with alarms and without. Some allow for video recording, while others snap single photos in either black and white or color. All offer the simplicity of a power-saving device that reacts to movement, making them excellent for security purposes, as well as any other use you may find.
